Happy New Year!
I just want to say that I am so excited about the New Year and the wonderful things that shall unfold in your life. Despite what may have happened in 2015 – the good or the bad – you made it into a brand new year, which means there is an opportunity for you to do better, love harder, laugh louder, and of course, move forward.
Speaking of moving forward, if you are anything like me, I’m sure you have been very reflective over the last few days. More than likely, you’ve mulled over your shortcomings, disappointments, mistakes and even victories from the past year, and now you have resolved to make changes in hopes of building a better future in the New Year. Can I be honest – Resolutions haven’t really worked for me! I typically become so overwhelmed by the MANY things I wish to accomplish; that I actually accomplish NOTHING. I set out to conquer the world, or more specific, “my world” – my relationships, my finances, my health and wellness, my spiritual walk with God, etc. – only to fold under the pressure of too much…. too soon.
Left frustrated by my shortcomings and unfulfilled goals… Does this sound familiar?
So this year, I had a thought: instead of spreading myself over several areas of focus, why not focus on one thing, or in this case, one word. Not a slogan. Not a phrase. One. Word. That is all it takes! I believe words are powerful; and the right word in the right season can yield powerful results.
Even as I am writing this post, I can’t help but to think of the Bible story about the centurion solider who petitioned Jesus to heal his servant (Matthey 8:5-10). Though the centurion wasn’t a man of faith, he understood authority; and when a command is given by one in authority, that command will yield results. During his encounter with Jesus, the centurion said to Jesus: “Lord, I am not worthy that You should come under my roof. But only speak a word, and my servant will be healed (emphasis mine).
Powerful, right? All the centurion needed was for Jesus to speak a word, and his servant would be healed. Just One Word!
Could it be that the healing, restoration, change, breakthrough you desire in 2016 will come through just one word? Maybe it is your consistent, relentless pursuit of one word is what will launch you into your purpose? All it takes is one word and the right word is just want you need to remind you of God’s love and His presence in your life.
In pursuit of my one word, I asked God a question: Who do you want me to be in 2016? And the word that came to my heart was “ASSURED”. Now, I must admit, I wasn’t really excited about the word “assured”. I said, “God, I thought you would give me a powerful word like: “Go”, “Forward”, or “Win”. And He spoke to my heart ever so gently saying, “I want you to be assured of who I am in your life so you can have confidence in My character and in My abilities; not yours. What’s more powerful than that?” In that moment, with tears streaming down my face, I experience a new level of God’s love and care for me. To confirm the word “Assured” in my heart, I selected the following three scriptures as my reference and guide throughout the year:
- Psalm 103:7 NKJV – He made known His ways to Moses, His acts to the children of Israel.
- Jeremiah 32:27 NKJV – “Behold, Iam the Lord, the God of all flesh. Is there anything too hard for Me?
- Jeremiah 33:2-3 NKJV – “Thus says theLord who made it, the Lord who formed it to establish it (the Lord is His name): ‘Call to Me, and I will answer you, and show you great and mighty things, which you do not know.
Just to think, I can be assured that God is able to do all things and He can equip me to do what HE has purposed for me to do. This was greater than any GRAND word I could have come up with.
Now, you know it didn’t stop there! In fact, I was so excited about my experience with God that I felt compelled to share it with a few girlfriends. To my surprise, God has already impressed upon their hearts to select one word as a focus for the year. Here are a few of their selections: “Focus” “Movement” “Rest” “Intentional” and “Trust”.
Of course there were a few who didn’t follow the one word rules J, but nonetheless, they were able to discover their one word, I mean, one phrase for 2016. Here they are: “Come Forth” “Ready, Set, GO”
Now it’s your turn. What is your one word? I ask that you take a few days to prayerfully ask God to reveal your one word for 2016. If you don’t know where to begin, consider the following questions as a guide:
- Prayerfully select one word
- Identity a key Bible verse that connects to or reaffirms your one word.
- Share why you believe God impressed upon your heart to embrace your one word.
I am so excited about your journey. Discovering your one word will provide clarity, focus, and the drive you need to do all that you aspire to accomplish in 2016. But keep in mind: discovering your one word will not only reveal who God is in your life, it will show you who you really are. So get ready to grow in faith and to be stretched like never before.
I ask that you share with us your one word for 2016 and what you believe God wants to reveal to you through this word. We would love to celebrate and encourage you while on your journey. I love you!
Live. Move. Become.
